A Night of Magic and Tradition

The Hoi An Lantern Festival, also known as the Full Moon Festival, is one of the most picturesque and well-known celebrations in Vietnam. Held in the ancient town of Hoi An, this unique festival enchants visitors with its magical ambiance, colorful lanterns, and deep cultural significance.

The festival takes place every 14th day of the lunar month, when the full moon graces the night sky. As darkness falls, public lights in the old town dim or turn off completely, giving way to thousands of colorful silk lanterns and flickering candles that illuminate the streets and rivers of Hoi An. While the festival attracts many visitors and can get crowded, it is truly an experience worth having.

The History of Lanterns in Hoi An

The story of lanterns in Hoi An dates back to the 16th century, when Chinese and Japanese traders introduced them to the area. Lanterns were believed to bring good fortune to homes, and soon, friendly competition among families spread throughout the city. Over time, these colorful creations became the iconic symbol of Hoi An.

Although lantern making declined during the war, it saw a resurgence in the 1990s, with local artisans reclaiming the tradition. By 1998, Hoi An combined its historic full moon rituals with lantern displays, giving birth to the Hoi An Lantern Festival as we know it today. Today, the festival attracts thousands of visitors from Vietnam and around the world, offering a perfect blend of history, spirituality, and beauty.

The Spiritual Meaning of the Lantern Festival

Before it became the “Festival of Lanterns,” the full moon was a sacred time for Buddhism in Vietnam. The full moon marks key events in Buddha’s life, including his birth and enlightenment. During the festival, locals honor their ancestors by burning symbolic offerings such as fake money, paper houses, and paper phones. These offerings represent gifts for the deceased in the afterlife.

Pagodas become lively with prayers, offerings of fruits and flowers, and chants from worshippers. It’s a beautiful time to observe the fusion of tradition, religion, and community.

Streets Lit by Lanterns

At 6:30 PM, Hoi An’s old town transforms as businesses and public lights turn off. Streets glow with lanterns and candles, creating a mesmerizing and timeless atmosphere. Start your stroll on Nguyen Thai Hoc Street near the central market and head toward Le Loi Street, where it’s quieter and feels more traditional.

A Magical Boat Ride

A highlight of the evening is taking a boat ride on the river while releasing a candlelit paper lantern. The experience offers a stunning view of Hoi An from the water. Rides cost 150,000–200,000 VND  for 30 minutes, with prices regulated by the city.

Buy and Release Paper Lanterns

At the port, vendors sell paper lanterns with candles for 5,000–10,000 VND . Locals release these lanterns onto the water while making prayers for health, prosperity, and happiness.

Visit the Pagodas

During the festival, pagodas in Hoi An’s old town are open for free. Join the locals in their prayers or simply enjoy the vibrant spiritual energy.

Bai Choi is a traditional Vietnamese game that combines singing with bingo. Held near the An Hoi Bridge, you purchase a card for 20,000 VND . If the singer calls a word that matches your card, you win a prize.

Experience Folk Songs and Local Arts

Near the Japanese Covered Bridge, classes teach traditional Vietnamese songs to children. Even if you don’t understand the lyrics, the music transcends barriers and offers a glimpse into local culture.

You’ll also find artisans creating traditional crafts like calligraphy, bamboo root carvings, and handmade lanterns—perfect souvenirs to remember the festival.

Capture Stunning Photos of Chess Players

During the festival, chess players in traditional Vietnamese attire set up in front of houses, providing photographers with stunning visuals.
